If you are new to eBay you need to know that eBay selling requires a seller’s account, which is very simple to set up, everyone else can jump to the eBay selling tips below. The five things you need to know to sell on eBay are how to photograph your item, categorize your item, listing your item, conducting an auction, and shipping your product.

Photographing your item

The item for eBay selling should be digitally photographed so the photo can be uploaded onto the eBay site. Your photos should be clear, well focused and well lit. Avoid shadows and out of focus images. Take photos of the front, side and back of items with distinct sides. Take a picture of controls and manufacturers labels. You may have a memory card to directly upload the pictures or you may use a USB cord to connect your camera to your computer. After the photos are taken upload them onto your computer and then onto the website.

Categorize your item

After establishing a seller’s account, time to start selling on eBay.  First, take a digital photo of the item for sale. Have a category in mind for the item to be sold in so customers seeking it will be able to find it. If you type in the manufacturer and model number other similar items will appear. You can simply follow the leader. If others already have you item in the camera category, place your item in that category also.  eBay has a “List your Item” button with additional directions to get your listing online.

Listing your item

The next step is to search for your item by UPC, ISBN or other description. To find out what an item is worth go to “Advanced Search” and click “Completed Listings”. Looking under the same category you can find the same item and determine what its sales price was. You will be prompted to indicate how you want the item listed. You will provide a descriptive title, upload photos, describe your item, set starting price and auction bid time, set buy it now price, determine shipping cost, and choose your method of receiving payment. To get an idea of what to call your item or how to describe it look at other similar items that are already listed. Especially look at sellers who have a high approval rating. These will be the sellers you will want to imitate.

Setting up your auction

To find the price for which previous items sold go to “Advanced Search” and then click “Completed Listings”. Next select what you are looking to find and once again check the box called “Completed Listings”. You will see a page full of similar items that sold previously.

It is best to start your bids low. This will draw more interest. When the interest is generated, those who truly want the item will begin to bid and the competition for the item will begin. It’s best to make the time for bidding the same as the successful sellers with similar products. If they give an average of 3 days for the auction, you should also.

Do Not Forget to Consider the Cost of  Shipping

Shipping charges can be waived to encourage people to buy. Just select “Free Shipping” or “0” for shipping and you will waive shipping and handling. Flat shipping can also be selected making the cost the same for every buyer. You can also select Calculated shipping so that cost will vary based on where the item will be shipped.
